It looks like a credit card and can be used like a credit card, but it's not a credit card. What is it? A debit card, and using it can be confusing at first to some consumers. A debit card works more like a check than a credit card. And while it has its advantages, you need to realize exactly how a debit card impacts upon your related bank accounts.

There are two types of debit transactions, both often housed on the very same card that your bank sends you as a replacement for your old ATM card. The first are on-line transactions you perform at an ATM. Just put in a personal identification code (PIN) and the funds are electronically transferred from your account as you designate. The second (and faster growing) are offline transactions: present your card in a store and it's treated like a credit card sale. The money used to pay for the transaction is then deducted from your checking account, usually within a day or two.

There are charges associated with debit cards, but consumers might not be immediately aware of the costs; often they are "waived" until the card is first activated. In most cases the first transaction is usually "free." Offline cards have minimal fees that typically run $1.50 a month. Online transactions can cost 50 cents or more. Fees can be imposed by your bank, as well as the bank that owns the ATM which you are using. Some cards pay you to use them.

If you plan to be a heavy debit card user, keep accurate transaction records. You may want to consider obtaining overdraft protection, so that you won't accidentally debit your checking account into default. Every time you are tempted to use your card think about whether you'd pay less with an online transaction, an offline transaction, or writing a paper check. Using your offline debit card at a gas station could result in you paying a higher credit price for your gas. Use an online card at the grocery store and you can end up paying a small fee, even though the same store is happy to process your purchase as an offline debit transaction at no cost to you.

We suggest consumers should carefully protect the security of their debit cards and related PIN numbers. A thief with your debit card can clean your bank account out before you even know it's missing. Keep in mind that a thief doesn't need your actual card to debit your bank account; often your card number is sufficient. Report your lost or stolen card to the bank immediately. Your liability is limited to $50 if you report the loss within two days; if you wait longer, your liability can go to $500. If you don't discover that your card is missing until you receive your checking account statement, you have 60 days to report the theft and limit your liability to $50.
